Half A Decade And Still Going Strong, Everlasting Love For The Underground
From Poptart to Beat!, HangTheDJ to LO-FI, Guerilla to +65, in the past and in the present, HOME has constantly and consistently pushed all sonic boundaries and has pioneered the way for just about every influential dance movement occurring round the globe, be it Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Live Electronica or even Indie Rock… the list goes on and on. Graced by special guest appearances from legends across multiple genres, the club has been fortunate to have been visited by some lovely people; label bosses, rock stars, champions and the downright famous – all sharing the same love for music. To name only a few – the likes of Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Pendulum, Craze, Kid Fresh, Rafik, Kele (Bloc Party), Mani (Stone Roses/ Primal Scream), LOVEFOXX (CSS), Al Doyle (Hot Chip), Simon Rix (Kaiser Chiefs), Bugz in the Attic, Peaches … the list really does go on and on.
Together with DJ SS back in 2005, HOME Club was officially born amid the sounds of rolling breaks and bottomless bass. Five years, two renovations and a full cycle later, HOME still stands and the subs are still booming. Celebrating with us this time is DJ Marky (Innerground Records, Brazil) and Stamina MC (UK), arguably one of the most exciting pairs to be witnessed at the decks. With his signature samba style, under Stamina’s summery vocals, the duo is set to bring the roof down, five times over. And if that’s not enough to shout about, local scene legend, Vortex returns from his two year exodus in London, joining +65 residents Ming & Kiat on the decks to complete the ultimate line up.
Through great times, and not so great times, HOME has persistently ploughed through all of them. Tireless in their support, and supporting tirelessly, the club has over the years met great people, and not so great people, but regardless, continued to play an active role in the development of local talent. Whether it be contributing to fly bands overseas, or merely giving an aspiring DJ their first gig, creating a stable and musically diverse community within Singapore has always been a priority since HOME is what it says on the metaphorical label – A place of comfort, for friends, for family, the home of drum and bass, the home of the indie-pendents. HOME – the glamorous underground.
With over 20 years as a true international professional, DJ Marky has taken the level of artistry involving DJing and music production to a whole new level.
The mild-mannered Brazillian first popped up on the global radar in the mid to late 90s, just as the Jungle scene was starting to take a proper foothold in clubland. With a background mainly compromising of Hip Hop, Funk, Techno and a well-attended residency in Sao Paulo, the Jungle movement really caught his attention and the genre soon became a true and relenting passion.
The big break however came when MOVEMENT traveled to Brazil and DJ Marky was spotted by legend of the scene Bryan G. One track was all it took to pioneer a tour of the UK and spawn a career spanning two decades; that track, of course was “LK”, written alongside fellow compatriot XRS.
A meteoric rise to stardom soon followed, fuelled by the success of “LK” reaching Number 15 in the UK Top 20 chart, and further catapulted by what is widely referred to as one of the greatest compilations of all time, “The Brazilian Job”. The album proved a perfect showcase for the talents of DJ Marky, combining tracks and scratching techniques in faultless fashion and showing that element of flair and creativity sorely lacking from the then Drum & Bass scene.
Now, after years of incessant touring, DJ Marky is still one of the most revered and coveted DJs in clubland and festival-land, having headlined Brazil’s premier outdoor festival Skolbeats nine years in a row. His productions have graced many a compilation and are played by some of the biggest names in DnB, his label Innerground Records goes from strength to strength and the DJ MARKY & FRIENDS brand continually strives for world domination, having secured residencies in some of the most glamorous cities on the planet including London, Paris, Tokyo and Sao Paulo.
So, almost 100 releases in various formats, mediums and genres down the line, including some high profile remixes for Everything But The Girl, Claude Von Stroke, Fatboy Slim and Deadmau5; and DJ Marky is still at the top of his game and showing no signs of slowing. A raft of releases are scheduled for 2010 including a string of vinyl releases and mixed compilations as well as an extensive touring schedule ensuring each and every continent gets a glimpse of a true performer doing what he does best.
A multi-talented natural performer, effortlessly combining the roles of vocalist, host and MC with a massive stage-presence, Stamina’s well-earned reputation speaks for itself. He‘s a touring veteran and lives up to his name absolutely, making regular appearances across the globe in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Japan, UK, Europe and beyond. Whether alongside Shy FX, DJ Marky, DJ Fu & Jungle Drummer or a whole of top DJs, Stamina’s high-energy performances are certain to raise the crowd with an outstanding range of lyrics, harmonies and freestyles to match the occasion. A total professional, his love of music always takes centre stage and shines through whether performing live, on radio or in the studio. Stamina’s unswerving commitment to the drum & bass scene at a grass roots level really sets him apart from the rest and has won him the support of a broad base of fans. Representing on London’s Rinse FM with a weekly show, he’s also a moderator for Drum and Bass Arena’s online forum plus a producer and a DJ in his own right.
Stamina is, by now, no stranger to the stage or to the studio. It was in 2000 when he got his first break, with regular appearances at Bryan G’s Movement nights, and in the years since he’s played on some of the biggest stages in the world, including Glastonbury, Exit Festival and Skolbeats.
He’s also responsible for voicing two tracks that have charted in the UK Top Twenty (‘LK’ with DJ Marky & XRS, ‘Barcelona’ with D-Kay & Epsilon) and has worked with Roni Size (‘On & On’) and more recently Ill Logic & Raf (‘Blood Meridian’) and DJ Fresh (‘Hypercaine’). With a wealth of experience and energy to match, he’s also fronted live touring shows with London Elektricity Live and Craggz & Parallel Forces. Currently Stamina is performing regularly as MC of choice for both DJ Marky and Shy FX, with further endeavours into the ‘live’ arena in the shape of ‘Jung Fu’ (Jungle Drummer vs DJ Fu live).
Stamina has also hosted Rinse FM’s first dedicated drum & bass show since Summer 2008. Broadcast weekly on a Tue night/Wed morning, his show enables him to get back to his lesser-known roots in DJing – check the archive available here. Stamina is also affiliated with ethical clothing brand, THTC, who have a long tradition of supporting conscious underground artists. For the future, expect more vocal outings in a multitude of genres, production under the long-dormant alias of ‘Armour’ and DJ sets.
